ORI attends Oxford University to learn more about the use of wearable technology

Machine learning of wearables in large scale biomedical studies course

ORI’s Postdoctoral Data Science Research Assistant, Dr Richard Matzko, recently spent a week at Jesus College within Oxford University to gain insight and connect with leading researchers in the design, execution and analysis of studies involving wearable devices for clinical purposes.

The course, titled ‘Machine Learning of Wearables in Large Scale Biomedical Studies’, was organised by Professor Aiden Doherty (front left), and involved guest speakers and resident Oxford researchers running lectures and workshops. Topics included:

  • The use of large-scale biomedical data such as the UK Biobank for longitudinal studies
  • The potential significance of wearable data collected within Big Tech
  • The processing of accelerometer data
  • The building of machine learning models for classification of physical activity windows
  • Sleep analysis

Over the forthcoming year, Dr Matzko, alongside the dynamic ORI team led by Professors Rob Middleton and Tom Wainwright, in a notable collaboration with Data Science Professor Marcin Budka, will continue to evaluate the recovery profiles of orthopaedic patients to gain insight into their rehabilitation process, physical nuances and clinical outcomes.
