Bournemouth University’s Festival of Learning hosted by Orthopaedic Research Institute

This year at Bournemouth University’s Festival of Learning, ORI are delighted to be hosting two fantastic events for the public to attend. The evening begins with a demonstration of Orthopaedics in Action, where we will be showcasing our brand new Gait Real-time Analysis Interactive Laboratory (GRAIL). There are only three other GRAILs in the country, and we are lucky to have these state of art facilitates. Participants will see a demonstration of how the technology works, and gain knowledge on virtual reality movement analysis. We are also demonstrating the use of a surgical simulator as a training facility for performing a total knee replacement. Participants will be able to test their skills at carrying out surgery! Finally, Head of ORI and Professor in Orthopaedics, Robert Middleton, is challenging participants to beat his power output on a Watt bike over a minute. Do you have what it takes?

Our second event of the evening is our Expert Talks lecture, chaired by Associate Professor Tom Wainwright:

“We really enjoyed the festival of learning in 2016, and can’t wait to be hosting our own event this year. It is a fantastic opportunity to tell the local public more about the research we are doing to help improve patient care both locally and internationally.”

In this session, three clinical experts will discuss how local programmes are helping patients treat hip and knee pain without surgery. This will include a talk from Professor Robert Middleton on the conservative management of hip arthritis. James Creasey, Senior Physiotherapist at Royal Bournemouth Hospital will discuss the possibility of curing knee pain through a strengthening programme. Finally, the evening will close with Neil Cowan, Director of Operations: Surgical, from Royal Bournemouth Hospital, who will present what our local hospital is doing to help patients.

All tickets are free but must be booked in advance! If you have any questions about either event, please email Louise Burgess (email: lburgess@bournemouth.ac.uk phone: 01202 961651).
