March 2015 – Press release

New pan European project was kicked off at Bournemouth University, UK

Bournemouth University, UK hosted the kickoff meeting of the Marie Curie RISE funded project: FoodSMART. The project will run from January 2015 to January 2019.

We are delighted to announce the start of the new pan European FoodSMART project that aims to enable informed consumer choice when eating out, sending personalised food recommendations to your mobile phone or tablet. Frequent out-of-home consumption has been associated with higher energy intakes, and a higher prevalence of overweight and obesity. Additionally, most consumers seem to underestimate the nutrient content of their dish selection. Given the possible mismatch between the perceived and actual nutritional value, the inclusion of enhanced menu information could benefit consumers by effectively transforming their ability to make informed food choices. In addition, this innovative IT solution will also aid caterers to comply with the new EU legislation in relation to allergens.

FoodSMART is an industry-academia partnership led by Bournemouth University, UK with academic partners Copenhagen University and the Hellenic Health Foundation and SME partners Ronge and Partner, Austria and the Institut Paul Bocuse Research Centre, France. This research will not only bring new information about the mapping of hospitality practice within the wider public health agenda but it will also add a major contribution towards evidence based practice within work site canteens.
