Eye movements when reading acronyms and textisms

Abbreviations necessarily abstract meaning in order to save space on the written page. Some abbreviations are used so often now that the majority of readers no longer know what they stand for: did you know that BMW stands for Bavarian Motor Works?

This talk will explore how cognitive science uses eye movement recording to figure out the mental processes involved reading. It will also investigate what the rapid increase in abbreviation use might mean for the future of written language.
