The fourth International History of Public Relations Conference (IHPRC) will be held on Monday June 24 and Tuesday June 25, 2013 at Bournemouth University in Dorset, England (Note the earlier date).

The conference, organised by the Institute for Media & Communication Research in BU’s Media School, is an international opportunity for academic researchers, historians and interested practitioners to meet, hear papers and discuss this emerging area of research. Planning is well advanced for the 2013 Conference.

The cost of the conference is £275 per delegate, with an ‘early bird’ rate of £225 per delegate for booking on or before Friday, April 12. The full delegate rate then applies until the conference commences. One-day (either Monday or Tuesday) attendance is £160 per delegate with no early payment discount. (Note: The one-day rate date does not apply to speakers). There is a special rate of £100 for doctoral and postgraduate students.

* The Conference Dinner has been organised for the evening of Monday, June 24 at the Carlton Hotel. The speaker is PR pioneer and former international chairman of Burson-Marsteller, Robert S. Leaf. Tickets are £35/person and can only be booked online. Details of the dinner menu can be found on the registration form.

Travel to Bournemouth

Delegates from outside the UK mostly fly into Heathrow Airport, which is London’s main airport, and then travel to Bournemouth by train, coach or hire car. From Heathrow, there are regular coaches from the central bus station and terminals 4 and 5 to Bournemouth. They stop at the transport interchange near the town’s rail station; don’t go on to the coach stop at the university. From Bournemouth station, it’s a short taxi trip to the conference hotel. There is a RailAir coach service from the Heathrow terminals to Woking rail station where you catch the train to Bournemouth.

Others spend a few days in London as tourists and then take a train from Waterloo station to Bournemouth (with a terminus of Weymouth). Journey time is around 1hr 45min. Waterloo is on the underground Tube network on the Northern, Bakerloo and Jubilee lines.

Bournemouth has a limited range of scheduled flights mainly in the UK and nearby Europe, including Dublin. It is possible to fly into Paris or Amsterdam and get a connection to Southampton. Immediately by that airport, you can catch a train west to Bournemouth about 40 minutes away.

Conference Hotel

The conference hotel, which is 5 minutes’ walk from the conference venue, is the Ramada Encore in Bath Road, Bournemouth (there is a 5-7 minute walk to the sea in the other direction). The hotel has a block of rooms set aside for IHPRC delegates and has a special price for clients connected with Bournemouth University. The rates are £56.00 per room per night for sole occupancy and £64.00 per room per night for double occupancy and include breakfast. Delegates should telephone + 44 (0)1202 291266 or email in order to book their rooms directly with the hotel, quoting IHPRC CONF. The email address is: reservations@encorebournemouth.co.uk. Don’t use the Ramada online booking system!

There are many, many other hotels in Bournemouth, so don’t feel restricted to the Ramada Encore. You want to be in the Lansdowne or East Cliff areas.

We look forward to welcoming you to Bournemouth University on June 24-25, 2013.
