Bournemouth University Archaeological Research Consultancy (BUARC) is a commercial archaeological consultancy and contracting unit based within Bournemouth University’s Department of Archaeology and Anthropology. Services
The BUARC consultancy service is designed to guide you through planning requirements at an early stage in the process. Our professional team compile site appraisals and archaeological desk based assessments providing comprehensive assessments of below-ground archaeology and how potential development might be impacted.
Our Management Team compile Written Scheme of Investigations (WSI) or Project Designs for every project and liaise with local authorities and national bodies on your behalf.
Our Geophysics Team undertake archaeological geophysics surveys as a non-intrusive method of assessing the archaeological potential of a site and gain a better understanding of how archaeological features might be impacted by any development.
Our Fieldwork Team undertake archaeological field evaluations in the form of Trial Trench Evaluations, Strip, Map and Sample projects, Archaeological Excavations and Archaeological Watching Briefs guided by Written Schemes of Investigations or Project Designs which set out the bespoke requirements for your project.

Sectors

BUARC works in partnership with land managers to conserve scheduled monuments, manage forestry impacts and ensure agri-environment schemes consider archaeological implications. We work closely with the construction and minerals sector to ensure heritage issues are dealt with in the most effective way to minimise historic environment project risk.
BUARC provides guidance to private developers throughout the planning process and undertakes all forms of onsite archaeological projects to ensure planning conditions are discharged through appropriate mitigation strategies.
Our expertise in the renewables sector, including onshore wind and solar farm developments, as well as utilities in the form of water pipelines, underground cables and overhead lines, enables us to assess the potential impacts of such developments on heritage assets and help clients to design projects that minimise project risk alongside cost-effective mitigation.
