Day 14 – Trackway, bones and more ditches.

Thursday 26th June 2014

After having a very busy day yesterday, today remained to be a relatively quiet day, with the primary focus on removing and bagging the skeletons in order to preserve them as soon as possible. The bags that they are being placed in have to be labelled very carefully and thoroughly labelled so that there would be absolutely no confusion as to which bones belong to which skeleton. It got harder towards the end of the day to remove the bones because it started to rain and the students had to work even faster to try to stop the bones from getting very wet. Nearby to the skeletons Martin Green (a local landowner, archaeologist, author, and guest to the site) finished digging a section in a feature that seemed to be cut by the Mausoleum. This feature only went a few inches deep, and it has been interpreted as being a Bronze/Iron Age trackway, and was cut into by the Mausoleum.

Over in Trench 1 the Iron Age ditch that is cut by the sunken feature has started to be excavated. This will be very useful the see the stratigraphy because we can use it to work out the relationship between the two different features, plus it can help us to see what direction the ditch follows, and if there are any finds coming out of it further down.

The site got closed off early today due to bad weather, so unfortunately not as much was accomplished today as had hoped to be. But luckily all the skeletons were removed before the end of the day.
