Today continued to be a day consisting of troweling back the site. It was also the first day of the site logistics job for the first year. This job consists of making sure that the site has a constant water supply, which is especially important when the finds from the features need to be cleaned and washed. This job also requires making sure there is enough hot water during the breaks and lunch for any tea, as well as taking the tea out to the supervisors. This is also important because without tea, most of the supervisors would be rendered useless! The site logistics team also has to make sure that the site remains clean and tidy so to reduce any risks of accidents, as well as giving a good impression should the landowner decide to visit the site to see how the excavation is going.
By midday Trench 2 had finished being troweled back, and the students were set to start excavating their first features. However the troweling back for Trench 1 wasn’t finished until the end of the day, and so tomorrow will be the start of the proper excavation for that trench. The site directors and supervisors are generally pleased at the progress that is being made on site, although the spoil heap for Trench 2 has already had to be moved and it’s only the second day!
By the end of the day the atmosphere on site was very positive because everyone was glad that the troweling back had finished and that they would be able to start on digging the features tomorrow.
