You might be thinking of applying to university, or you  may have already applied to university but feel a little apprehensive about leaving your partner behind. I have been in a relationship with my boyfriend for 5 years and nearly 2 years of this time I have spent at University. I am writing this blog post to give my top tips about how to keep the relationship happy and healthy while being so busy with your uni lifestyle.

The first way to keep your relationship healthy is COMMUNICATION. Making time to talk to your partner or even give them a quick message in the evening is very important. You don’t need to be talking 24 hours a day as you want to chuck yourself into a Uni lifestyle and make a lot of time for your friends and the people around you. But communicating about what you have been up to and updating each other about your everyday life is important as you do not want them to think they are missing out on a chapter of your life.

You also want to get your partner involved with your friends at University. Make sure that when they come to visit you make time for them to meet your close friends and spend time with them. This is a way of getting them involved in your new life even though they are so far away. Even if it is just going for a coffee date or going on a night out, I think it is a great way for them to not feel left out. Keep them in the loop of your new friendship group.

Plan weekends with your partner rather than just going with the flow. If you organise a weekend together you both have something to look forward to. This will keep the excitement in your relationship rather than it just being a drag, whether it is just going for dinner or a different activity. Make sure that you put in maximum effort because if you are in it for the long haul you don’t want to regret anything you do at University. You do not want to lose focus or your priorities when you don’t spend as much time with your partner as you normally would.

At the end of the day, you get out of a relationship what you put in so put your happiness first. To make each other happy you must not stop each other living your individual lives and reaching goals. Make sure that you build separate lives, yet also build lives together. You want to bring the best out of each other and improve each others lives!
