Hear first-hand from some of our students what BU Scholarships have meant for them.

BU Sport Scholarship

BU was an easy choice for me. The first reason was because the placement opportunities that my course provided were better than the other 4 universities that wanted to recruit me but also Bournemouth was the central location for Beach Volleyball (as the England Head Coach is based in Bournemouth).

I was fortunate enough to hear about the BU Sport Scholarship  through some past sports scholars who were still apart of the Senior England Beach Volleyball Pathway and had studied at BU and to this day I am so pleased I heard about it! The funding support I have received throughout my time at BU has helped me so much. Beach Volleyball doesn’t get much funding support from our national governing body post the 2012  Olympic Games so without it, I really wouldn’t have been able to be where I am today.

All the funding received from my BU Sports Scholarship along with external sponsors has helped fund my training and competitions in order to go out and excel in my sport.

BU Academic Excellence Scholarship

Bournemouth University offers a range of scholarships, rewarding academic excellence, and musical or sporting talents. The fact there was a chance I could be awarded a non-repayable sum encouraged me to work that little bit harder to achieve those grades I desired. So, anxiously opening that brown envelope on results day, finding out I achieved the required grades**, and learning that my pocket was now a little heavier, gave me just another reason to celebrate.

These are just a few of the ways my scholarship has enhanced my time at university. Given in the form of paid card, with several instalments, it has been easy to use in shops and online (and now they’ve even got contactless). So, get cracking on your revision, earn those grades you long for, and you could find yourself £1,000 richer (September 2020 entry).

BU Music Scholarship

The music scholarship has provided me with the extra funds I needed so that rather than finding part-time employment during my studies, I could attend weekly lessons, perform both with the university and other local orchestras and have also been given paid solo performance opportunities at prestigious university events. When I enquired about

singing lessons to develop in a new direction of music, I was offered them for free on top of all the benefits I already had from the scholarship! No other university seemed so proactive in providing me with so many opportunities and funding and BU has made every effort to fit in with the unusual hours of my nursing course.

With the university, I’ve performed in Winchester Cathedral, the Royal Bath Hotel ballroom, jazz performances on the beach pier, a musical production of Madness and joint concerts with other universities. Although returning to university was a major life change, the support and encouragement I received from the BU Music Department and Scholarship meant that I didn’t have to choose between my passion and my studies.
