If you’re looking to apply through UCAS but not sure where to start, don’t worry! Our Future Students Enquiry Team have come up with some frequently asked questions that they’d like to help you with.

What is the UCAS deadline for September 2020 applications?

Applications for undergraduate courses should be submitted to UCAS by 6pm GMT on Wednesday 15 January 2020. But we’re past that I hear you say?

Well that’s ok, because we’re open for late applications, which means you’re still able to submit your application with your five choices like you would do before the above deadline!

Providing a reference

We recommend providing a reference with your application. If you’re unable to provide this before submission, continue to submit your application but please bear in mind that a reference will be necessary for us to provide a decision.

Your referee(s) should know you well enough to write about you and to indicate whether you are suitable for the course. We cannot accept references from family, other relatives or friends.

If you’re at school, college or university, or you’ve left recently, you should ask your tutor to provide this. If you are applying independently, ask your previous school/college or organisation registered with UCAS. Alternatively, ask your current or previous employer, careers advisor or senior colleague.

There’s a really helpful video from UCAS showing how to request a reference here.

What should I include in my personal statement?

We understand that writing your personal statement can be difficult, try to think creatively about how to present yourself and really make your application stand out and most importantly, be you!

Here are some top tips of what to include from our current students:

  • Demonstrate a real love and passion for the course
  • What experiences do you have that are over and above the norm?
  • Why does this subject interest you so much?
  • Really sell yourself and be proud of everything you’ve achieved so far.
  • Anything extra-curricular is always viewed really highly.
  • Check your spelling, grammar and punctuation!
  • Ask friends, family or teachers to proof read your statement before submitting.

UCAS also have a great video to help get you started, watch it here.

When will I have an update on my application?

We will process your application as quickly as possible, although depending on the number of applications we receive, it may take around 3-4 weeks to process and provide you with a decision.

What if I forget to add something to my application?

Don’t worry, it’s not too late to send through extra information. Contact our Future Students Enquiry Team and they’ll be sure to point you in the right direction.

How do I track my application?

Once you have submitted your application you will receive a login to access and track your application in your myHub account. MyHub is BU’s online portal which stores all the relevant information about you and your application.

Please keep an eye on UCAS Track and MyHub for any updates.

Good luck!
