BA (Hons) English

It’s difficult to just choose three favourite experiences, but here they are !!

Meeting new people –

Sounds cliché but I really have met some amazing people over the last 7 months. It was initially quite overwhelming, as you’re meeting people from your course, accommodation, clubs and societies, nights out, through friends of friends and through so many other routes. This meant quite quickly (and surprisingly easily) I was able to form a great friendship group from the very beginning of my university journey, which made me feel at home right at the start! Remember, everyone is in the same boat at the beginning, so even if you don’t find people you click with straightaway, don’t worry, you won’t be on your own and there’s no rush!

Freedom! –

Bournemouth have the BEST sunsets

Quite suddenly, I was now in charge and responsible for the majority of my day-to-day life! This was one of the factors that I was apprehensive about when moving away from home, and as I waved my parents off on a September evening I was now solely independent and free to make my own plans! Over the last 7 months, I have learnt that with responsibility and independence, also comes the freedom and fun that I now thoroughly enjoy! The spontaneous arrangements/adventures that I have made with my friends, ranging from meals and drinks to evening ice skating, beach visits and laser tag, have all been extra special because you no longer need to run them by anyone else! This is all accessible in Bournemouth, as everything is in walking distance. You can easily walk into town, through the gardens and onto the beach within 10 to 15 minutes (depending on how quick you are!) Not only do you get to arrange your social life without a thought, but there’s food freedom !! Buying and eating what you want and where you like! There’s freedom to lie in and stay up, and go out or stay in! There is just a lot more flexibility in your day-to-day life, that I think everyone enjoys.

 Course Opportunities –

As an English student, I’ve had the chance to take part in various interesting events and activities. Since English is part of the Faculty of Media and Communication, I regularly receive additional emails updating me on exclusive opportunities, such as getting our writing published, working as a presenter on comedy panels, or even working abroad in places like Ecuador or China. Most recently however, I travelled to the London Book Fair where we were able to attend a variety of talks and presentations from those in the industry and collect useful contacts from major companies.
