It’s natural to have fears and concerns about starting university. For many people, it involves moving away from home, usually for the first time. I remember how scared I was at the thought of being in a strange place without any of my friends and family and wondering if I was going to cope. But here I am, now in my final year at BU, without a single regret about any of my choices I made!

My concern of being alone was something I overcame pretty quickly. My flatmates were all in the same boat, all moved away from home so we were able to support one another through the challenges we faced. As for things like cooking, that is something you’ll definitely soon learn. You can only eat so many pot noodles and instant pasta before you face your demons and cook!

Before I came to university I could only cook the basics, but I made sure I pushed myself to try and cook more ‘adventurous’ meals rather than always having ready meals or pasta. I would even say I’m at the point where I now enjoy cooking! Moving to a new, unfamiliar place can seek daunting, but Bournemouth has great bus and train links which makes getting around the local area so easy. Living in halls during first year meant I was near the centre of town close to the shops, clubs and beaches. I’ve tried to make sure I’ve seen the town and local areas, and my goal for final year is to see more of Dorset while I am here!

The most important thing to remember is that, coming to university everyone is likely to have a fear about one thing or another. My advice would be to face the challenge and try and overcome it, rather than spending 3 or 4 years avoiding it! If you can overcome your fears of coming to university, you’ll most likely find you have a more enjoyable time here.
