This paper adopts an existential-phenomenological\u00a0<a title=\"Learn more about Perspective\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/social-sciences\/perspective\">perspective<\/a>\u00a0to understand tourists\u2019 lived experiences of being gazed upon by local people. Based on thirty experiences collected from interviews with ten participants, we show that experiencing the \u201cLocal Gaze\u201d exposes the tourist as Sartrean \u201cTourist-esque\u201d: an inauthentic experiencer of positivity,\u00a0<a title=\"Learn more about Discrimination\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/social-sciences\/discrimination\">discrimination<\/a>, alienation and self-consciousness. Moments of true human connections are at best ephemeral. Through an existentialist\u00a0<a title=\"Learn more about Optical Instruments\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/social-sciences\/optical-instruments\">lens<\/a>, the study questions the possibility of authentic host-guest relationship in\u00a0<a title=\"Learn more about Tourism\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/social-sciences\/tourism\">tourism<\/a>\u00a0and argues that to maintain hopes for an authentic relationship, the\u00a0<a title=\"Learn more about Conceptualization\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/social-sciences\/conceptualization\">concepts<\/a>\u00a0of \u201cGaze\u201d and \u2013 perhaps even of \u201cTourism\u201d \u2013 need to be transcended.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Philipp\u00a0Wassler and\u00a0Ksenia\u00a0Kirillova 2018,\u00a0Hell is other people?
