{"id":430,"date":"2012-01-18T16:39:54","date_gmt":"2012-01-18T16:39:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/?p=430"},"modified":"2016-03-10T14:05:41","modified_gmt":"2016-03-10T14:05:41","slug":"bu-hospitality-students-scoop-first-place-at-top-industry-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/2012\/01\/18\/bu-hospitality-students-scoop-first-place-at-top-industry-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"BU Hospitality students scoop first place at top industry conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aasHdOnTZLM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nThree winning BU hospitality students were at the Hilton on Park Lane attending the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masterinnholders.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Master Innholders conference <\/a>on Monday to collect their competition trophy.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Julian Dombrowsky, Suzanne Parr and Eleanor Moore stepped on stage in front of over 450 top industry professionals to do a short presentation and collect their award for creating\u00a0 the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ra_Ll-fbCds&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\">winning video <\/a>which addressed \u2018Maintaining Sustainable Competitive Advantage\u2019 in the hospitality industry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_435\" style=\"width: 476px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/files\/2012\/01\/AmasterinnholdersEDIT.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-435\" class=\" wp-image-435  \" src=\"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/files\/2012\/01\/AmasterinnholdersEDIT.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"466\" height=\"370\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-435\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left to right; winning students Julian Dombrowsky, Suzanne Parr and Eleanor Moore<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0The students joined a number of high profile speakers, including the CEO of Union Square Hospitality Danny Meyer, who complained that the internet has \u2018disrupted the sanctity of a good idea\u2019 and focused on the \u2018empathetic and bespoke\u2019 nature of good hospitality.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Rupert Gutteridge, Regional Director of Sales for EMEA, spoke about the trends in discreet consumerism, augmented reality, and the fact that, \u201cIn 2013 more people will use their phone to surf the internet than PC\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Ufi Ibrahim, Chief Executive of the British Hospitality Association, spoke about the impact of the visit Britain funding cuts and the unusually high UK airport taxes. Martin Couchman OBE announced new legislation such as the fact it will be compulsory to detail food calorie content on a menu in 3 years time.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The conference also discussed how the industry is equipped to tackle youth unemployment and the problem of alcohol and drugs abuse in the hospitality industry, with a powerful personal anecdote of destructive addiction from Phil Howard, Chef and Co-owner of The Square. \u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_436\" style=\"width: 624px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/files\/2012\/01\/amasterinnholdersnetworkingEDIT.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-436\" class=\" wp-image-436 \" src=\"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/files\/2012\/01\/amasterinnholdersnetworkingEDIT-1024x798.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"614\" height=\"479\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-436\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students networking at the conference<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0Chairman of the London 2012 committee Lord Seb Coe was schedule to open the event, however the VIP guest ran 3 hours late and was swiftly rushed in and out, but gave a succinct thankful speech to the hospitality industry for making the Olympics 2012 feasible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Lord Coe told his audience,<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cThe Olympics started of as a conversation with a few friends in a pub about 7 or 8 years ago, now the Olympics 2012 committee is the same size as an organisation like Cadbury.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The former athlete credited the hospitality industry for making him feel at ease in his role for being in \u2018such good shape\u2019, and spoke about the \u2018potential and opportunity outside London\u2019, perhaps even hinting at BU\u2019s very own local Weymouth site.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0After admitting to a few nerves beforehand the students felt the presentation went well, Julian said,<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cI am looking forward to the people I will be meeting and networking with over the next few days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Associate Dean of Hospitality and Retail Management Andy Boer who accompanied the students to the conference, thought they did \u201cremarkably well, as it is no mean feat doing a presentation in front of 450 general managers staring at you!\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<div id=\"attachment_437\" style=\"width: 333px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/files\/2012\/01\/amasterinnholderstrophyEDIT.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-437\" class=\" wp-image-437  \" src=\"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/files\/2012\/01\/amasterinnholderstrophyEDIT-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"323\" height=\"430\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-437\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The winning trophy<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0Andy also acknowledged that at least 6 or 7 graduates approached him throughout the conference congratulating him on how great the students were, which also reflects how well the alumni go on to do in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The conference finished today Tuesday 17 with the students coming to the end of their brilliant prize, of being chauffeured to and staying in 3 top London hotels, and having exclusive meetings with senior staff and general managers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 Three winning BU hospitality students were at the Hilton on Park Lane attending the Master Innholders conference on Monday to collect their competition trophy. \u00a0Julian Dombrowsky, Suzanne Parr and Eleanor Moore stepped on stage in front of over 450 top industry professionals to do a short presentation and collect their award for creating\u00a0 the&#8230;
