{"id":4299,"date":"2017-06-01T16:31:21","date_gmt":"2017-06-01T16:31:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/?p=4299"},"modified":"2017-06-01T16:31:21","modified_gmt":"2017-06-01T16:31:21","slug":"dr-anya-chapman-celebrates-200-years-of-the-british-seaside-pier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/2017\/06\/01\/dr-anya-chapman-celebrates-200-years-of-the-british-seaside-pier\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr Anya Chapman celebrates 200 years of the British Seaside Pier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dr Anya Chapman recently presented a paper entitled \u2018Celebrating 200 years of the British Seaside Pier\u2019 at the \u2018Beside the Seaside\u2019 conference in Scarborough. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/files\/2017\/06\/C-L-qdkW0AAcaG8-e1496334621302.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4300 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/files\/2017\/06\/C-L-qdkW0AAcaG8-e1496334621302.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a>The conference was hosted by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scarboroughmuseumstrust.com\/seaside-heritage-network\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Seaside Heritage Network<\/span><\/a>, which Anya is a founding member of. \u00a0In her presentation, Anya looked at the historic development of British seaside pleasure piers, from their beginnings as humble landing stages, through to the &#8216;golden age&#8217; of pier building. However, she highlighted that over the last 40 years some of the most iconic piers have been lost, and the situation is increasingly challenging for those that remain. Anya then went on to showcase four seaside piers (Bournemouth, Hastings, Penarth and Folkestone) which have recently rejuvenated and repositioned to become seaside heritage assets that are embracing the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Anya is truly a seaside pier aficionado, being an executive committee member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.piers.org.uk\/\"><span class=\"s2\">National Piers Society<\/span><\/a>, and having visited all 59 seaside piers in the UK.
