{"id":2384,"date":"2014-04-28T08:00:06","date_gmt":"2014-04-28T08:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/?p=2384"},"modified":"2014-04-28T13:25:40","modified_gmt":"2014-04-28T13:25:40","slug":"school-of-tourism-undergraduates-highlight-research-at-national-gatehering-of-bcur","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/2014\/04\/28\/school-of-tourism-undergraduates-highlight-research-at-national-gatehering-of-bcur\/","title":{"rendered":"School of Tourism undergraduates highlight research at national gatehering of BCUR"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>School of Tourism had an impressive presence at last week\u2019s BCUR (British Conference of Undergraduate Research) gathering held at Nottingham University www.bcur.org.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its fourth year, the 2014 conference was the biggest yet with 350 undergraduate students from university\u2019s all over the UK and beyond.\u00a0\u00a0 The students were joined by other undergraduates from: London School of Economics, University(s) of Cambridge, Aberdeen, Leeds, Exeter and Reading, Roehampton &amp; Newcastle, Trinity Dublin and Tennessee.\u00a0 Topics ranged from Genetic engineering; Preparing youth for the UK labour market; to advances in water purification, archaeology and recent controversies in the meat industry affect buying behaviour. Katie Azulay, is studying a BSc (Hons) Sports Development and Coaching Sciences and said &#8220;BCUR is an experience I will never forget. Seeing other students research from\u00a0all around the world was extremely interesting, as well as presenting my own research to them &#8211;\u00a0a proud moment representing BU&#8221;.\u00a0 Katie presented her research on \u2018Investigating the impact of motivational interviewing on exercise adherence among Exercise Referral Scheme patients with a BMI &lt;35\u2019.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2390\" style=\"width: 447px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/files\/2014\/04\/BCUR-group-photo1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2390\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2390\" alt=\"Dr Ian Jones, Dr Joanne Mayoh, Amber Madkour, Adam Doherty, Rachel Luff and Katie Azulay at BCUR in Nottingham.\" src=\"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/files\/2014\/04\/BCUR-group-photo1.png\" width=\"437\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/files\/2014\/04\/BCUR-group-photo1.png 437w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/files\/2014\/04\/BCUR-group-photo1-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 437px) 100vw, 437px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2390\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Ian Jones, Dr Joanne Mayoh, Amber Madkour, Adam Doherty, Rachel Luff and Katie Azulay at BCUR in Nottingham.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>BU\u2019s wider presence at BCUR ties nicely into raising the profile of undergraduate research in future from a successful Fusion Bid led by Luciana Esteves to host SURE@BU (Showcasing Undergraduate Research Excellence) in March 2015.\u00a0 The SURE@BU gathering is meant to give students the opportunity to gain key experience and skills, but also make their work visible to potential employers or placement hosts.\u00a0 There will be awards and prizes for the best posters and oral presentations.\u00a0 It is hoped that the successful hosting of SURE@BU places BU in a position to also host the national BCUR gathering in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The School of Tourism final year undergraduate students saw the true benefit of participating at BCUR in Nottingham last week.\u00a0 Adam Doherty, who studying BSc (Hons) Sport Psychology and Coaching Science said \u201cI thoroughly enjoyed it and was amazed at the wide variety of research that was being conducted at this level (Undergraduate). I learnt a vast amount about subjects in which I had little or no prior knowledge of and I was glad to be able to showcase my work to others who were equally interested\u201d. Adam\u2019s research is entitled \u201cIs there a science behind saving penalties?\u00a0 A study looking into the psychological approach in a goalkeepers positioning and movement from 12 yards\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Other ST students also took part earlier in the year in BCUR\u2019s led up event called Posters in Parliament, held in the Jubilee Room at Houses of Parliament.\u00a0 Amber Madkour studying BSc (Hons) Sports Development and Coaching Sciences presented her research on \u2018Exploring Feminity in fitness:\u00a0 Crossfit as a site for empowering embodiment for Women\u2019 and Rachel Luff presented hers on \u2018An Investigation into volunteer management techniques used to achieve expected volunteer experience at Great Ormond Street Hospital Children\u2019s Charity\u2019.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2386\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/files\/2014\/04\/Rachel-L-Parliament.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2386\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2386\" alt=\"Rachel Luff presented hers on \u2018An Investigation into volunteer management techniques used to achieve expected volunteer experience at Great Ormond Street Hospital Children\u2019s Charity\u2019\" src=\"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/files\/2014\/04\/Rachel-L-Parliament-1024x672.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"672\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/files\/2014\/04\/Rachel-L-Parliament-1024x672.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/files\/2014\/04\/Rachel-L-Parliament-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/tourism\/files\/2014\/04\/Rachel-L-Parliament.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2386\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rachel Luff presented \u2018An Investigation into volunteer management techniques used to achieve expected volunteer experience at Great Ormond Street Hospital Children\u2019s Charity\u2019<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A number of MP\u2019s were also on hand during the day to meet and chat with students on their research.\u00a0 This included among others David Blunkett, Angela Smith, Simon Hart,\u00a0and Mark Williams.\u00a0 There was a judging panel made up of Ben Wallace MP;\u00a0 Sean Coughlan, Education Correspondent at the BBC; Professor Julio Rivera, President of the US Council of Undergraduate Research; and Katherine Harrington of the Higher Education Academy.\u00a0 Amber had the following comments about profiling her research in Parliament \u201cPartaking in this event allowed me to share what I have learnt by\u00a0discussing\u00a0the focus of my dissertation with other students and academics. Being able to present\u00a0my research in Parliament is a day I will remember looking back at my\u00a0University career, and I am very proud to have such an opportunity\u201d.\u00a0 Rachel Luff, who also took part said \u201cThe feedback I gained was very positive, people saying how interesting and relevant my topic is, this\u00a0reaffirmed my interest in the research and took\u00a0away from the &#8216;dread&#8217; of the dissertation journey.
