The story behind my research has a less than academic setting!\u00a0In May 2016, I was in Bali as a\u00a0volunteer, teaching children how to\u00a0play the drums. Whilst I was there, I\u00a0made friends with a local guy, Ketut,\u00a0and we began snorkelling together.\u00a0We started discussing our shared\u00a0interests in marine conservation,
\nand I realised that the north of Bali,\u00a0where Ketut lives, was in serious\u00a0need of a reef conservation program.\u00a0When I returned to BU, I co-founded
\nBali Reef Conservation as part of my\u00a0summer placement.\u00a0Since then, I\u2019ve travelled to Bali\u00a0three times, and I\u2019m now working\u00a0here for my placement year (thanks
\nto some extra funding from BU\u00a0towards my flights).\u00a0The aim of Bali Reef Conservation\u00a0is to restore and conserve coral reef\u00a0in a small Indonesian fishing village
\ncalled Tianyar. It has been destroyed\u00a0due to unsustainable fishing practices\u00a0and excessive boat traffic, so we are\u00a0building artificial reefs in the area\u00a0with the aim of connecting two\u00a0existing health coral reefs.\u00a0We\u2019ve built and deployed over\u00a02,000 artificial reef units already\u00a0but we also carry out other work,\u00a0such as plastic \"\"<\/a>recycling programs,\u00a0turtle conservation, weekly marine\u00a0conservation classes with local\u00a0schools, and beach cleans.\u00a0My main role is managing volunteers, fishermen and teachers, ensuring\u00a0that we have a lot of community\u00a0engagement with the program. We\u00a0work with people, educating them\u00a0about how to live more sustainably\u00a0and protect their marine environment.\u00a0My lecturers have been a great\u00a0support, and I wouldn’t have been able\u00a0to do this without their help. It\u2019s been\u00a0an incredible experience, and one\u00a0that means I have no hesitation in\u00a0recommending BU!
