Our\u00a0aim? To help reduce HIV infection rates.<br \/>\nThroughout the placement, I was closely involved in\u00a0the everyday movements and interactions of AARG&#8217;s\u00a0outreach workers and their clients. This ranged\u00a0from attending Narcotics Anonymous meetings to\u00a0distributing clean needles, visiting methadone clinics,\u00a0and building a rapport with people in their homes or<a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/undergraduate\/files\/2019\/01\/Emily-Poulton.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9670 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/undergraduate\/files\/2019\/01\/Emily-Poulton-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/student-blog\/files\/2019\/01\/Emily-Poulton-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/student-blog\/files\/2019\/01\/Emily-Poulton-768x603.jpg 768w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/student-blog\/files\/2019\/01\/Emily-Poulton-1024x803.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/student-blog\/files\/2019\/01\/Emily-Poulton.jpg 1049w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nrehabilitation centres.\u00a0One of the main factors which led me to choosing\u00a0a 20-day placement unit was that I knew I wanted\u00a0to do a placement and have the skills to help me in\u00a0future employment, but I didn\u2019t want to take a whole\u00a0year out of university.\u00a0My placement gave me a deeper understanding\u00a0of the global pandemic that is HIV and AIDS.\u00a0I experienced first-hand the issues that arise\u00a0for individuals as well as society and learnt to\u00a0understand the impacts of these. Additionally, I built on my own interpersonal and social skills and\u00a0the work I underwent immensely supported me in\u00a0developing my professionalism.\u00a0It was also a great experience to work in such an\u00a0amazing part of the world \u2013 somewhere I never\u00a0thought I could visit and can&#8217;t wait to return to.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a guest blog by current student Emily Poulton, studying BA (Hons) Sociology and Criminology.
