{"id":9582,"date":"2019-03-22T18:33:19","date_gmt":"2019-03-22T17:33:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/undergraduate\/?p=9582"},"modified":"2020-10-26T16:23:33","modified_gmt":"2020-10-26T15:23:33","slug":"the-european-cyber-security-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/student-blog\/2019\/03\/22\/the-european-cyber-security-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"The European Cyber Security challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>This is a guest blog featuring Sophia McCall, studying BSc (Hons) Cyber Security Management.<\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019re proud of the achievements of all of our students, and are always pleased when their undoubted skills and abilities are recognised by others too.<br \/>\nSecond year BSc (Hons) Cyber Security Management student Sophia\u00a0McCall is the latest example of a BU\u00a0computing student receiving national\u00a0recognition when she was called up\u00a0to Team UK for the European Cyber\u00a0Security Challenge.\u00a0Sophia was one of a ten-strong\u00a0team that comprised students and\u00a0industry <a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/undergraduate\/files\/2019\/01\/Sophia-McCall.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9673 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/undergraduate\/files\/2019\/01\/Sophia-McCall-300x257.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/student-blog\/files\/2019\/01\/Sophia-McCall-300x257.jpg 300w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/student-blog\/files\/2019\/01\/Sophia-McCall-768x657.jpg 768w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/student-blog\/files\/2019\/01\/Sophia-McCall.jpg 891w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>professionals. With 15 countries taking part, Sophia and her team performed exceptionally well to secure a third-placed finish &#8211; but even making the team itself was a remarkable achievement.\u00a0Sophia faced multiple rounds of tough qualifiers to become a team representative; she participated in online and face to face qualifiers &#8211; tasks including\u00a0ethical hacking challenges, security challenges, hardware hacking and then presentations. She said: \u201cOur lecturers have given us fantastic support to get us to the competitions, and their advice on particular challenges has been really supportive.\u201d Sophia is also the Vice President of BU\u2019s Cyber Security Society. The society, which isn\u2019t limited to computing students, runs sessions every week teaching its 120 members ethical hacking, cyber security and other skills they can apply to real life situations, whether in their future career or as an additional skill to add to their CV.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a guest blog featuring Sophia McCall, studying BSc (Hons) Cyber Security Management.
