Student loans only go so far, and, too often, they’re running low by the time you’ve paid the rent. On the other hand, part-time jobs are not worth risking your degree. Try to find a job that you can fit around your studies: If you’re working 20 hours a week and missing lectures to do so, it’s going to be stressful. Evening or weekend jobs are probably more flexible, as you still have time for lectures during the day. Try not to have too much on the go – you might be capable of working two jobs, but if you’re working four it’s going to take its toll!

A lot of jobs are available through Bournemouth University itself: for example, as a Student Ambassador, working in the offices or library, as a PAL leader in your second year, or even as a student blogger. Recruitment for most of these roles will be in September, when you first start uni. These are jobs that keep you on campus, and shifts can often fit in with your lectures.

Alternatively, many students work in jobs outside of the university. There are opportunities in restaurants, cafes, pubs or shops. A lot of retail jobs come with staff discount, which can be especially useful if it’s discount on food! The best thing to do is start looking early, because a lot of students are going to want jobs too. Get a CV ready, and try to find things that are feasible.
