He has worked at Bournemouth University for over 7 years and continues to drive people to pursue their passion of scriptwriting. We got together to discuss his life at BU and the course itself.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: black\"><i>What is your academic\/professional background?<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #1f497d\">I started out at the BBC, an assistant in the Education Unit before moving to Programme Commissioning at Channel Four \u2013 amazing job, a lot of fun, heart of the channel, co-managing development\/production slate along with directly overseeing our drama slate, plus in spare time script-edited for industry friends and also the UK Film Council on feature film development, I then moved onto LEGO as International Head of Development (Character &amp; Story) managing international team of writers\/creatives developing original stories\/characters in partnership with the toy guys and the marketing\/multiplatform guys (who marketed the properties and turned them into the computer game, website, trading cards, theme-park-ride, t-shirt, quilt-cover\u2026you get the idea \u2013 of which we wrote all the scripts\/copy\/material for).\u00a0 Dream job \u2013 got to travel the world, and yes, free LEGO!\u00a0 Then left, had my own consultancy (same industry) until I came to Bournemouth University \u2013 which is a blast! <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #1f497d;font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #1f497d;font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: black\"><i>Why did you choose to work on the Scriptwriting course at Bournemouth University?<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #1f497d\">Sounds biased but it\u2019s literally the best in the country \u2013 ask Skillset, as we\u2019re the <\/span><span style=\"color: #1f497d\"><i>only<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f497d\"> undergraduate degree course that they gave their accreditation to due to the quality of the programme.\u00a0 Plus, having spent most of my career either in London or flying around the world (yes, hard life \u2013 pity me!) it\u2019s nice to live 10mins up the road.\u00a0 Also, it\u2019s that it\u2019s based in an amazing Media School with other strong courses that provide many opportunities for the scriptwriters, as either writers or script-editors.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #1f497d;font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #1f497d;font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;font-size: small\"><span style=\"color: #1f497d;font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6388\" style=\"width: 637px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/undergraduate\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_1044.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6388\" class=\" wp-image-6388\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/undergraduate\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_1044.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"627\" height=\"418\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6388\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Resh Somauroo at Deep Dive 2016, Photographed by Olga Gunderich<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: black\"><i>What makes the Scriptwriting course unique compared to other media based courses at BU?<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #1f497d\">The obvious answer is they specialise in scripts and storytelling, be it short films (live-action or animation), creating original television shows or writing full-length feature films.\u00a0 Plus, as I mentioned, they have the opportunity to work with the other media students.\u00a0 As a course we also provide the <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #1f497d\">Script Clinic<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #1f497d\"> service, providing editorial assistance for all media students on their projects with a narrative content.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #1f497d;font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: black\"><i>What personal skills would you say prospective Scriptwriting students should have?<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #1f497d\">A love of storytelling, in all its forms and genres, pro-activeness <\/span><span style=\"color: #1f497d\">, open mind, good negotiating skills\u2013 communicating <\/span><span style=\"color: #1f497d\"><i>why<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f497d\"> a project is a good idea makes a career \u2013 ah yes, and the most important ones of all &#8211; being able to stick to a word\/page-limit and a deadline.\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #1f497d;font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #1f497d;font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: black\"><i>And finally, why is this course so beneficial to students?<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #1f497d\">It\u2019s been designed with input and continual guidance from the Industry itself \u2013 as much as possible within a University, we try to mirror as many industry practices as we can, finally we truly believe that if students they take advantage of every opportunity that <\/span><span style=\"color: #1f497d\"><i>we<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f497d\"> present to them in conjunction with those that <\/span><span style=\"color: #1f497d\"><i>they<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f497d\"> proactively generate, then it\u2019ll be incredibly difficult <\/span><span style=\"color: #1f497d\"><i>not<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #1f497d\"> to nail that job of their dreams.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: black\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Resh Somauroo is the Scriptwriting for Film and TV 3rd year Programme leader.
