In fact, BU was first recommended to me at a university fair—by someone representing another university—which says a lot about its reputation in the industry.

Some of the highlights of my time at BU were the excellent tutors and the course structure, which allows you to specialise in your second year after a broad introduction in your first. The Poole Gateway Building also offers outstanding facilities.

My studies equipped me with valuable insights about myself and the industry. Specialising in Production Management for my final project taught me early on what wasn’t the right role for me—far better to realise this in a university environment than on a real production with money on the line. On the other hand, the encouragement I received in Script Skills nudged me toward accepting my real passion: writing. That clarity paid off. I landed my first job in television just two months after graduating, largely because people recognised the value of my qualification.

Since then, my career has been anything but linear. My first job came via a phone call in the middle of Asda—proof that networking truly is everything. I worked on two seasons of a TV show before my creative pursuits took over. After dabbling in short scripts and poetry, I tried an open mic night on a whim. The positive reaction pushed me to take writing seriously, eventually earning a publishing deal at just 23. I returned to the UK to complete an MA in Scriptwriting while continuing to work in TV, and since then I’ve gained multiple film festival placements, produced an audio drama broadcast on Radio Bath, and begun shopping three feature films—including a musical that has attracted early interest from an American producer.

What I love most about my work is simple: the joy of creating. There is nothing more exciting than bringing an idea to life. As writer Sean Thomas Dougherty put it, “Because right now there is someone out there with a wound in the exact shape of your words.” That sentiment drives me every day.

For anyone looking to follow a similar path, here’s my advice:
1. Network relentlessly. Every job I’ve had has come through a connection.
2. Take yourself seriously first. The industry will treat you as you treat yourself.
3. Make things. Get experience. Employers want to know what you’ve worked on, not just what you studied.

If I could go back and tell my younger self anything, it would be all of the above.

My BU experience in three words?
Challenging. Necessary. Worthwhile.

When I first applied to university, I knew I wanted to do something media‑related, but I wasn’t yet sure where I would fit.
