{"id":25870,"date":"2024-02-28T08:00:17","date_gmt":"2024-02-28T07:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/student-blog\/?p=25870"},"modified":"2024-02-27T17:34:25","modified_gmt":"2024-02-27T16:34:25","slug":"my-top-tips-for-transitioning-to-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/student-blog\/2024\/02\/28\/my-top-tips-for-transitioning-to-university\/","title":{"rendered":"My top tips for transitioning to university"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It can be quite daunting starting university but as a third year student here at Bournemouth these are my top tips to help you feel more prepared and make the most out of your university experience!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Before you move to university:<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Do your research!<\/strong> It\u2019s great to familiarise yourself with the university and what it has to offer before you get there. A great way to do this is to attend an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bournemouth.ac.uk\/open-days\">Open Day<\/a>, visit the town or look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/virtualtour.bournemouth.ac.uk\/\">online resources<\/a> available.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Start collecting things for university a few months before<\/strong> &#8211; avoid being in a rush the week before you move, make sure you have everything you need <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in advance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Follow a packing list &#8211; <\/strong>there are lots of websites with lists that detail the important items you need to bring, some of which you may not even thought of! Check out this one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucas.com\/money-and-student-life\/student-life\/starting-university-or-college\/list-absolutely-everything-you-need-take-university-or-college\">here<\/a>!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Learn how to cook before moving to uni <\/strong>&#8211; even if it\u2019s just a few basic meals. Be experimental with your food and you&#8217;ll actually start to enjoy cooking rather than it seeming like a chore. It\u2019s also a great way to meet people!<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Go to freshers fair<\/strong> &#8211; this is the best way to see all the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bournemouth.ac.uk\/why-bu\/clubs-societies\">clubs and societies<\/a> on offer and there\u2019s also loads of freebies and food and who doesn\u2019t love free things!<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>At the start of each semester make a note of all your deadlines and keep this in a special place <\/strong>&#8211; I use the notes app on my phone so I\u2019ll always have it to refer to.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Don\u2019t be shy to ask for help <\/strong>&#8211; there are teams of people to help with all kinds of queries from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bournemouth.ac.uk\/students\">academic support<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bournemouth.ac.uk\/students\/help-advice\/financial-support\">financial<\/a> and also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bournemouth.ac.uk\/students\/health-wellbeing\">health and wellbeing<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Listen to your body<\/strong> &#8211; it\u2019s really exciting starting university but it can be a very busy and overwhelming time so listen to your body if you&#8217;re feeling tired and run down. Try your best to eat healthy and get as much sleep as you can.<\/span><\/span>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_25872\" style=\"width: 188px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/student-blog\/files\/2024\/02\/IMG_9281.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25872\" class=\"wp-image-25872\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/student-blog\/files\/2024\/02\/IMG_9281-170x300.jpg\" alt=\"Here's me on a student ambassador job!\" width=\"178\" height=\"313\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-25872\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here&#8217;s me on a Student Ambassador job!<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>If you\u2019re looking for a part time job see what your university has to offer <\/strong>&#8211; here at BU there are so many part time jobs available to students from being a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bournemouth.ac.uk\/students\/careers-employability\/find-job\/become-student-ambassador\/student-ambassador-opportunities\">Student Ambassador<\/a> to working at the on campus cafes or our student union nightclub<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Budget!!<\/strong> It can be easy to lose track of your spending, so set money aside for rent and bills each month and keep this separate from the money you use for other things.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Have fun <\/strong>&#8211; Make the most of the opportunities available to you, it goes by so quickly!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s normal to be nervous when moving to university but remember everyone is in the same boat and you\u2019ll settle in quicker than you think and it will soon feel like home but always remember if you\u2019re struggling there are people you can reach out too.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It can be quite daunting starting university but as a third year student here at Bournemouth these are my top tips to help you feel more prepared and make the most out of your university experience!
