{"id":1917,"date":"2015-02-02T14:31:44","date_gmt":"2015-02-02T14:31:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/undergraduate\/?p=1917"},"modified":"2020-10-26T16:36:45","modified_gmt":"2020-10-26T15:36:45","slug":"selfies-from-the-stratosphere-bu-student-starts-space-probe-company","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/student-blog\/2015\/02\/02\/selfies-from-the-stratosphere-bu-student-starts-space-probe-company\/","title":{"rendered":"Selfies from the stratosphere: BU student starts space probe company"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A BU Business student has created a space probe company that has taken selfies in the stratosphere.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www1.bournemouth.ac.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/bournemouth_wysiwyg\/public\/assets\/images\/BU%20in%20space.jpg\" alt=\"BU%20in%20space.jpg\" width=\"412\" height=\"275\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/courses.bournemouth.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate-degree\/business-studies-with-enterprise\/ba-hons\/412\/\">BA (Hons) Business Studies with Enterprise<\/a> student Sam Harrison has set up the company, which sends probes up into space to conduct research and provide experimental marketing for businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Sam, who is currently on placement with a software start-up company in California, has already successfully launched a probe 89,000 feet up into the stratosphere using an Indian weather balloon.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cThe first probe was partly paid for by a company in California to take the first &#8216;selfie&#8217; in space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFuture vehicles could be used for a huge range of things such as marketing activities, biological research into cosmic radiation and how this affects cells, for example.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sam has been supported by BU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/studentportal.bournemouth.ac.uk\/career\/study-abroad\/global-horizons-fund\/global-horizons.html\">Global Horizons Fund<\/a>, and received funding through the scheme to study in China, India and Australia, before heading to California.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cThe Global Horizons Fund has been incredibly helpful and I cannot be thankful enough for their financial support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think having these incredible opportunities hugely accelerated my own personal development, and I also found getting the chance to live in another country for an extended period of time hugely beneficial.\u00a0I don&#8217;t believe that I would be where I was today had it not been for these experiences, which were largely funded by the Global Horizons Fund.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He came up with the idea for the space probe company while at an airport, waiting for his US visa to be approved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u00a0was\u00a0stuck in a layover at Los Angeles airport and came up with the idea. Thankfully, my visa did get\u00a0sponsored and I&#8217;m now\u00a0living back in Silicon Valley.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cI love doing my placement in California. The amount of opportunity out here for young people is incredible &#8211; living here\u00a0literally gives you the feeling that you can accomplish anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sam is now working on developing the technology and exploring ways in which the probes could be used to conduct low-cost research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in the early stages of designing some new technology to expand our near space capabilities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere in California, a small team of us is also building a small\u00a0multistage\u00a0rocket as well as some other rocket technology<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI plan on turning this into a fully-fledged business, with the main objective to fulfil our clients\u2019 marketing, functional or scientific needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Originally published on <a title=\"BU news\" href=\"https:\/\/www1.bournemouth.ac.uk\/news\/2015-02-02\/selfies-stratosphere-bu-student-starts-space-probe-company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BU News<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A BU Business student has created a space probe company that has taken selfies in the stratosphere.
