{"id":1861,"date":"2015-12-07T12:33:39","date_gmt":"2015-12-07T11:33:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/postgraduate\/?p=1861"},"modified":"2015-12-07T12:33:39","modified_gmt":"2015-12-07T11:33:39","slug":"why-i-chose-bu-for-my-masters-degree-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/student-blog\/2015\/12\/07\/why-i-chose-bu-for-my-masters-degree-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Why I chose BU for my Master&#8217;s degree"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tThere are many reasons to choose BU for postgraduate study.\u00a0 Here are the top three reasons why I, personally, chose BU for my Master&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The place<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BU was an obvious choice for me as it is the closest university to my home town of Poole.\u00a0 That said, I would\u2019ve been quite happy to relocate to beautiful Dorset had I not already lived here!\u00a0 Bournemouth and the surrounding areas have a lot to offer and I\u2019m glad to have stayed local.\u00a0 There\u2019s always something new to discover even though I\u2019ve lived here all my life, and being a part of the BU community has broadened my horizons and social opportunities which is great.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/postgraduate\/files\/2015\/12\/View-from-train-home-ed.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1863\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/postgraduate\/files\/2015\/12\/View-from-train-home-ed.jpg\" alt=\"View-from-train-home-ed\" width=\"600\" height=\"362\" \/><\/a>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>My view from the train travelling back from campus one evening; one of life&#8217;s simple pleasures showcasing lovely Dorset!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The course<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I decided I wanted to do a Master&#8217;s before I decided what course I wanted to do, so I needed something to really grab my attention before I committed to it.\u00a0 BU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.bournemouth.ac.uk\/study\/courses\/msc-public-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Master&#8217;s in Public Health<\/a> did just that for me.\u00a0 To be honest, I hadn\u2019t really known Public Health existed as a discipline until this point, but realised it really fits with my ambition of contributing to improved health at population level.\u00a0 The course also looked like it would equip me with the necessary practical knowledge and skills to be able to do this, whereas other wellbeing-related courses I looked at seemed to offer a lot of political understanding but less practical health improvement knowledge.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/postgraduate\/files\/2015\/12\/library-book-ed.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1862\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/postgraduate\/files\/2015\/12\/library-book-ed.jpg\" alt=\"library-book-ed\" width=\"338\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>My latest item from the BU library.\u00a0 My course teaches me about the principles of Public Health, such as tackling inequality, and allows me to apply this to my areas of interest, such as mental health.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The mode of learning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once I\u2019d realised Public Health was the field of study for me, BU seemed the best choice, not just because of the location but because of the way the course is delivered.\u00a0 It offers the choice of full or part-time study, with a great deal of flexibility within the part time option.\u00a0 Other universities only offered a full-time option, or distance learning only.\u00a0 I knew I couldn\u2019t study full-time, maintain a decent number of working hours and retain a social life and my own wellbeing all at the same time, so taking a flexible part-time course was a no-brainer.\u00a0 Also, I felt the face-to-face element of studying would be important, and this has turned out to be very true of the Public Health course due to the rich variety of experience and perspective that comes with the multi-national nature of the group.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By Lauren Bishop<\/strong>\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are many reasons to choose BU for postgraduate study.\u00a0 Here are the top three reasons why I, personally, chose BU for my Master&#8217;s.
