Bournemouth is famous for its beaches, but there is so much more to explore in this beautiful town. Here are my best tips on what to see and do in Bournemouth.

For art lovers

Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum has an incredible art collection. There are also changing exhibits so you can visit the museum many times and always see something new. In addition to the art, the home itself is a museum and it is really cool to see how people used to live in the Victorian era. You can also visit the museum café, a really cosy place to take a break with the most wonderful scones. Even though this list is all about attractions beyond the beach, I have to admit the museum also has wonderful views of the sea.

Photography

If you’re a fan of photography like I am, the BIC has great photography exhibitions on its first floor. They show talented local artists and they are completely free – always a plus when you’re a student.

Cute penguins

If you love animals, the Oceanarium is the place for you. They have many cool sea creatures to look at and you can learn a lot about them as well. The penguins are definitely the highlight of the experience for me.

Relax in nature

The Central and Upper Gardens in Bournemouth are so beautiful and peaceful. While the Lower Gardens are full of people on a sunny day, the Central and Upper Gardens tend to be a bit quieter. They are full of beautiful flowers and it is such a great place to have a picnic or just sit and enjoy the sun. Whenever I need a break from studying, I take a long walk in the gardens to clear my head and relax in nature.

Churches and Frankenstein

Whether you’re religious or not, St Peter’s Church has an amazing history and beautiful gothic revival architecture. For literature fans, the graveyard includes the grave of Mary Shelley – the author of Frankenstein. An additional tip for you: in the summer heat, the church is a great place to cool down and enjoy a quiet moment.

As you can see, Bournemouth has so much more to offer than just the beach. I hope you enjoy going out and exploring this beautiful town.

Milla Räsänen, Sweden, MSc Clinical and Developmental Neuropsychology, 2017/2018

I’m Milla Räsänen from Sweden and I’m studying MSc Clinical and Developmental Neuropsychology.
