Starting your master’s programme at BU can be very exciting! You will be meeting new people and engaging with a lot of different experiences. What should you do to make the most of your first term? Here are some tips to help you on your way.

Join a society … or create one!

From my experience, many students join a society in the first week. The freshers fair introduces you to an amazing array of clubs, societies, and sports teams. Joining one of these makes it easy to spend time with others who share your interests. If you don’t find a club you want to join…start one of your own!

Start building the foundations of your career

At the beginning of the term BU organises a wide range of events to help boost your employability prospects. These include, career fairs and presentations & workshops with potential employers. These provide a great opportunity for students to speak to recent graduates and employers about areas of interest or suitable graduate job opportunities.

My advice for you is to make sure you don’t miss anything interesting. Make sure that you keep up to date with the programmes offered by BU that may help you develop your career.

Stay in touch

I know that leaving home is the freedom that we’ve always wanted, but it is also tough to be far away from your family and friends that you’ve known for years. Some students love speaking to their parents almost every day, while others find it harder hearing news from home.

My advice as a BU student is to find a way that works for you and let your parents and your friends know that you’re ok and that you miss them. A short video call or text will help them to stop worrying and will help you not to feel alone.

Remember you are there to study

Remember that you came to BU to get a degree. To make the most of your course and your first term, you should always attend lectures and seminars, even if they’re early in the morning. It might seem like a waste of time for you, but you will meet new people and get invaluable information. You can’t afford to miss lectures!

Take time for yourself. Have fun!

Between classes, workshops, meetings, or exams, make sure you find time to relax, look after yourself, and have fun. Maybe you could use this time to join one of BU’s many clubs and societies, hang out with friends, learn new languages, or eat different kinds of foods.

One of the best things about university is that it puts you in contact with so many new people. Build new friendships, learn from each other, and share experiences because it’ll make you a more well-rounded person and equip you with the skills you need to work with all kinds of people in the outside world.

By Sandra Achim, Romania, MSc Events Management, 2017/18

I am Sandra Achim from Romania, studying MSc Events Management.
