I’m from Brazil and as many of you may know, it’s a huge country with many different types of food and flavours, depending on the region you live in. When I arrived at Bournemouth, I was very curious about what the food would be like, since eating and cooking are one of the things I love the most! I will now share some of my experiences with you.

Brace yourself, gravy is coming!

One of the things I noticed is that here almost everything is served with gravy, which is good because it is delicious. You can find gravy to buy at the supermarket or basically everywhere you go to eat out.

Eat in or takeaway?

There are a lot of types of restaurants from many different countries in the Bournemouth area. In the street that I live in, for example, you can find restaurants from 11 different nationalities in 2 blocks (yes, I counted them). Eating out is not as cheap as cooking for yourself, but when I compare the prices with restaurants in Brazil, I can say it’s pretty cheap to eat out!

Feeling homesick?

That’s fine! There is a lot of international food available in big markets or grocery stores. You can find many things from your home country if you look around. There are even some specific countries’ grocery stores that might help you find what you need. Some markets are way cheaper than others, so find out which ones are the best options for what you’re looking for.

The food at Bournemouth University is also quite good, with options for all tastes, from meat lovers to vegans. So don’t worry, you won’t go hungry here!

Good luck!

By Roberta Ribeiro

Hey everyone, my name is Roberta and I’m in Bournemouth for my MSc Biological Anthropology.
