Scary? Yes. Will you get through it? You will. Not too long ago, I was in your shoes. And if my past self could’ve had a little chit chat with my future self, this is the advice Future Merna would’ve given:

Asking for help: The way essays needed to be written and referenced at BU, it was a whole new world. In each school, there will be a team dedicated to helping you with your academic needs—from study tips to essay writing. Familiarize yourself with this team because they’re there to help and want to see you succeed.

Medical Centre: I encourage every student to sign up to the Medical Centre at the Talbot Campus. It saves the hassle and stress of having to search for a doctor in the area who’s accepting new patients.

Clubs/Societies: If there’s one thing I loved about my time at BU, it’s the fact that the university encourages students to get involved in extracurricular activities. From baking to marketing, as well as volunteering opportunities, you’ll find something that tickles your fancy. Clubs and societies are a great way to meet people and make new friends.

Travel: if you have the time and the funds, go on a little adventure. I’ve managed to see a lot of Europe during my time as a student. With an airport in your back garden, another in Southampton and two major airports less than two hours away, you can escape to just about anywhere. You can also take advantage of the amazing rail and coach links to explore the beauty that the UK has to offer.

Take some time for yourself: a healthy body makes for a healthy mind. I absolutely loved the gym at BU. Not only is the equipment new, there are also 50+ classes on offer a week – from kickboxing to yoga. All classes are led by local, certified trainers. You won’t be disappointed.

You’re a new student in a new country. Scary? Yes. Will you get through it? You will.
