It’s only since the first term has ended that I’ve had a chance to reflect and realise just how much of a journey it’s been. Here are ten of the main things I’ve picked up so far.

Making friends is easier

There were 60 people on my undergrad course, and while I did get to know most of them, there were inevitably different friendship groups. On my Master’s course there are just seven people, which means we’ve all become very close. The collaboration in our framework has made it easy to make friends on other courses too.

Everyone is passionate

We’ve all experienced situations where there are students who don’t put the effort in, but every postgraduate student I’ve met at BU is here because they really want to be, and they have a real passion for their course.

The staff get to know you

Maybe it’s partly because we are a smaller group, but the lecturers really get to know each of us on a personal level, which makes me feel supported.

I’m more involved in university life

I made a decision to throw myself into as many opportunities as possible at BU, and I’ve managed to do that. Being a Student Rep for my course and working as a Student Ambassador and blogger have allowed me to make the most of my time here and really feel involved.

I have a wider knowledge of radio

I spent three years presenting music shows on my student radio station, which made me want to come here and study radio further. I’ve already learnt so much more about the industry and have been able to explore other genres beyond music, including drama and features.

Bournemouth is the perfect place to study

I’d never visited Bournemouth before coming to study here, and it really is perfect for students. It’s not as overwhelming as a big city would be, but it’s certainly not a small town either. There’s always something to do and you won’t get lost. And of course there’s the beautiful beach!

Living in halls can be great

I was a bit nervous about living in halls again as a postgrad, but it’s worked out really well. I’m in Chesil House, which is in a convenient location and is actually the nicest student accommodation I’ve lived in.

I’ve become more independent

I used to go home at weekends during my undergrad study, but now that I live in the UK, that’s obviously not an option anymore. I no longer have the luxury of sneaking my laundry home in a bag to be done for the following week. I have much more responsibility now.

Life is busier

As a postgraduate, I now have one year to do everything in, so life seems much busier than before. It can be draining at times, so eating properly and getting enough sleep is now even more important than it used to be.

It’s fun!

Doing a Master’s is hard work, but it’s also very enjoyable. I’m lucky enough to be studying something I love and am trying to make the most of every moment.

By Sarah Stacey

Since starting at Bournemouth University in September, I’ve learnt so many things in a short space of time.
