{"id":14336,"date":"2014-10-30T16:23:02","date_gmt":"2014-10-30T16:23:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/postgraduate\/?p=755"},"modified":"2014-10-30T16:23:02","modified_gmt":"2014-10-30T16:23:02","slug":"bu-student-wins-arab-women-filmmakers-prize-at-international-film-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/student-blog\/2014\/10\/30\/bu-student-wins-arab-women-filmmakers-prize-at-international-film-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"BU student wins Arab Women Filmmakers Prize at international film festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tA BU student from Egypt has been awarded the Arab Women Filmmakers Prize at Baghdad International Film Festival for her debut feature.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Mourad, who has just started an <a href=\"https:\/\/courses.bournemouth.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate-degree\/directing-film-television\/ma\/5006\/\">MA in Film and Directing<\/a> at BU, won first prize in the Arab Women Filmmakers category for her short film <em>Quietly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The film \u2013 which tackles issues around loneliness and unhappy relationships \u2013 was Sarah\u2019s directorial debut.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t expect to win anything as it was my very first film and my first time working with a camera and actors,\u201d Sarah said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sent the film to festivals just for exposure and for it to be seen, but I wasn\u2019t aiming for prizes or awards. To win was a surprise, but a good surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah created <em>Quietly<\/em> earlier this year, as part of her portfolio of work to gain a place at BU.<\/p>\n<p>The film\u2019s story follows a degrading relationship between a couple who share increasing isolation with their worlds, which eventually leads to an obscure revenge.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah said: \u201cI had no previous experience in filmmaking before I came to BU, and a portfolio of work is needed for the application process, so I made <em>Quietly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The film tackles the issue of loneliness and being unable to connect with the important people around you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Baghdad International Film Festival aims to bring together young film practitioners and professionals from different countries, cultures and ethnicities.<\/p>\n<p>It received over 100 film submissions from across the world.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah was unable to attend the film festival but hopes the award will help kick-start her studies and filmmaking career.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cAwards offer great moral support but my main focus now is learning as much as I can from my studies at BU, so I can make more films in the future.\u201d\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A BU student from Egypt has been awarded the Arab Women Filmmakers Prize at Baghdad International Film Festival for her debut feature.
