Bournemouth University Finish 22nd in BUCS!
It’s been officially confirmed at the BUCS Conference last night that Bournemouth University’s Performance Sport programme has achieved its highest ever points total and ranking in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) league table! We were also one of only 3 nominated institutions for the most improved University of the year which was a real honour.
BUCS is the national governing body for Higher Education (HE) sport in the UK. The BUCS vision is to create the best university sport experience in the world, they deliver more than 50 competitive sports to over 170 member institutions. Here at BU our Performance Sport programme consists of 60 teams across 20 sports and engages around 900 student athletes. All of our athletes represent the university under TeamBU, the sporting competitive identify of BU.
At the start of the BU 2018 strategic plan the Performance Sport programme was positioned at 34 in the BUCS rankings. Our programme has gone from strength to strength in recent years and for the 2017/18 season BU finished 22nd competing against over 170 universities across the United Kingdom. This fantastic position could not have been achieved without our athletes, coaches, support service staff, SportBU staff and our key partners.
For some athletes representing the University will be the highlight of their sporting career which will stay with them for a lifetime. To achieve 22nd with all the league wins, cup wins, individual medals and general good performances, makes this year even more special for everyone and will only help to attract the next generation of student athlete.
Thanks to our partners

All of our athletes and coaches staff contribute to our BUCS points, this year’s key contributors were Volleyball (295), Golf (212), Futsal (149).

Discussing this year’s success, Mike said ‘last season both staff and students were a little disheartened to finish 31st in the BUCS rankings. Our aim has always been to reach 25th so to climb an additional three places and finish at 22nd is phenomenal! We couldn’t be happier or more proud of our entire programme’
Martin commented “The dedication and commitment from all the staff, students and our first class coaching team are testament to the success of the programme. We have had an exceptional team effort all round so thank you to every individual who have performed or supported their sport”.
Helen added “It was our vision to break the top 25 in BUCS by the end of the BU2018 Strategic Plan. I am beyond proud to say that we have achieved this. The Performance Sport programme has grown so much in recent years and this combined with athlete dedication, staff commitment and a fantastic coach and partnership support network has made this possible. I am excited to see what we can achieve next”
