TeamBU Sports Brief
At SportBU we have men’s and women’s competitive Tennis teams that compete in the British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) leagues and trophy competitions.We work closely with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) to ensure a comprehensive programme of tennis is available.
All teams are coached by Richard Irwin (LTA qualified Senior Performance Coach and former professional tennis player) and Matt Coombes (Level 4 qualified and LTA qualified Intermediate Coach). Leagues & Competition Information
For the 17/18 season our men’s first team will compete in the Southern Premiership as well as the Championship competition, our men’s second and third team will compete in Tier 2A of the BUCS league as well as the western Conference Cup. Our women’s first team will compete in Tier 1A (top division in the region) of the BUCS league as well as the national Trophy competition and our women’s second team will compete in Tier 2A of the BUCS league as well as the western Conference Cup competition.

Training & Conditioning
Times: Tuesday 8.45pm – 10.00pm (men’s), 7.30pm – 8.45pm (women’s).
Location: Bournemouth Gardens Tennis Club and West Hants Club.
As part of each team’s weekly training schedule additional specific sessions on flexibility, SAQ (Strength, Agility and Quickness) and fitness are provided by a full time Strength & Conditioning (S&C) Coach. Our coaches work alongside the S&C coach to identify areas to focus this sports specific training to improve physical strength, power and performance.
Fixtures are played on a Wednesdays at Bournemouth Gardens, please come down and support our teams!
Men’s third team won Tier 2A and gained promotion to Tier 1A.
Partnerships & Facilities
The West Hants Club offers heavily discounted student memberships, excellent coaching, playing opportunities and a Tennis Development Programme in conjunction with BU.
Athletes who have played or competed at a regional, national or semi-professional standard will be eligible to Apply for a Scholarship to support them in their sport whilst at university. Individual hitting sessions. Elite players have the opportunity to enter the BUCS Tennis Individual Championships as well as represent The West Hants Club. High Performance players have the opportunity to represent The West Hants Club.
