Kings Park Athletic Stadium

Athletics at Kings Park Athletic Stadium with Bournemouth Athletics Club

Kings Park Athletics stadium is located within Kings Park which is a short drive from sportBU. Its history dates back to the 1960s when the current stadium was built.  It was upgraded to synthetic in 1984 and originally had an Avonsport surface. It was resurfaced in 1990.

The site is home to Bournemouth Athletics Club who hold regular competitions there.  Our individual Athletics athletes train at the stadium in preparation for competitions within the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS). Furthermore, as part of our Free Your Fitness project, blocks of Athletics sessions (field and track) are run throughout the academic year.

Sir David English Sports Centre

Netball at the Sir David English Centre

The Sir David English Sports Centre is the home of the Bournemouth netball Leagues and is a 10 minute drive from sportBU. Our Varsity netball teams use these facilities for training and home games as well as our Netball Intramural League. The hard surface outdoor floodlit netball courts are of an excellent standard and are available on a Pay As You Go basis.

Wallisdown

Wallisdown playing fields are a 5 minute walk from the Talbot Campus and consist of two natural turf football pitches as well as a Cricket pitch marked out in the summer. It is predominantly used for our Intramural 11-a-side football leagues as well as our four Varsity football teams training sessions. During the summer months it is also used for Cricket matches.

Football, rugby, squash, table tennis and hockey at Chapel Gate

Chapel Gate is situated in Christchurch next to Bournemouth International Airport and it is a 65-acre sporting venue. It is home to the biggest rugby 7s tournament in the world and is home for international sport in the South.

Our hockey and lacrosse Varsity teams train at Chapel Gate as well as playing their home fixtures at this location.  Other Varsity teams such as rugby and football play also play their home fixtures at Chapel Gate.

Further to Varsity team training; some of our 11-a-side Intramural matches are played weekly at the venue on Wednesdays as well as Cup matches.

The facilities include three full size rugby pitches and a four junior rugby pitches which are considered by RFU to be the best pitches in the south of England.

A further six excellently maintained football pitches are used by professional teams for training as well as the general public.

On top of this Chapel Gates facilities include two full sized floodlit astro pitches which are used by our Varsity hockey teams; as well as squash courts, two gold standard Cricket pitches, table tennis and archery grounds.

West Hants

The Club was formed in 1926 and is a 15 minute walk from sportBU. It has 4 squash courts on site which are used for training sessions and home games by our Varsity squash teams.  On top of our Varsity programme, we have a link with West Hants allowing staff and students to use the squash courts on a Pay As You Go basis as part of our Social Sports programme.

Bournemouth Gardens Tennis Centre

Tennis at Bournemouth Gardens and West Hants

The Bournemouth Gardens Tennis Centre is a 10 minute car or bus ride from the Talbot Campus and it is located in Bournemouth town centre.  The facilities allow members of the public to play tennis all year round, both indoors and outdoors.

The tennis centre allows our Varsity tennis teams to train and play home fixtures throughout the academic year as well as our Free Your Fitness project running tennis coaching throughout the academic year.

The facilities at Bournemouth Gardens include;

  • five floodlit artificial grass courts
  • three indoor acrylic courts (covered by airdome October to May)
