Written by Matthew Spencer & Louise Burgess
In June 2019 both Matthew Spencer & Louise Burgess earned the amazing opportunity to play within the English Universities Men’s and Women’s Rugby 7s teams. Trials took place at Warwick University and both athletes were selected to represent the English Universities in the first tournament in Chester.
In the tournament Louise and the women’s squad managed to win every game with an astonishing one try scored against them all day! While Matthew and the men’s team narrowly missed out in the final to a strong side from the Navy. But both teams managing to qualify for the RFU 24/ seven’s National Final later on in June at Nottingham University.
Travelling up the night before they spent the evening analysing and scrutinising their performances from the previous tournament and planning how they could improve play the next day.
On the day of the tournament it was a scorching 32 degrees, one of the biggest challenges they faced was staying hydrated and alert throughout the day. Both teams managed to finish at the top of their groups, with the ladies beating Hammerheads, Mayans and The Cats with only one try scored against them again throughout the day!! The men’s team made an amazing effort making it to the semi-final and where they lost by two points in the last play.
Louise said that “Having the opportunity to play with the English Universities side was an invaluable experience which will no doubt help our future progression with rugby 15s and 7s.”
Both had the opportunity to play with some incredible athletes, including a member of the Great Britain skeleton team and an English Rugby League player! Thank you to all the staff at English Universities for making this opportunity possible and for the support and feedback received from all the coaches and physios throughout the day. As well big thank you to the team at Sport BU for their support in helping us get to the tournament.
