This event saw 6,220 competitors from universities across the UK compete in 9 different sports. Over the three day period BU athletes competed in Athletics, Judo, Swimming and Trampolining.
Friday saw a great start made by Megan Aitchison, setting the pace for the fastest heat in the women’s 800m. On Saturday Joe Arundel took on the men’s 3000m in his first ever BUCS indoor race, the tri-athlete missed out on qualification to the semi’s however showed great promise for his future athletics competitions. In the 800m semi’s Megan started well, however was unable to secure a spot in the final. At Ponds Forge the swim athletes had better luck with Tom Mills, Alice Robinson, Chris Neilson achieving PBs in their given events. BU’s first medal was claimed by Trampolining as Matt Shepherd secured gold in the Men’s BUCS 6 competition, Judo followed suit when BU sports scholar, Donna Riggs bought home silver in the 78kg weight category, improving on her bronze medal performance from last year’s competition, leaving TeamBU full of confidence for day 3.
Day 3 saw Trampolining achieve a further two medals, gold in the Men’s BUCS 1 was achieved by Jack Durham and the Men’s Team silver was also awarded thanks to qualifying scores from Matt, Jack and Men’s Elite finalist Ed Weeden. Despite qualifying for the men’s elite final in 1st place an unexpected landing meant on this occasion Ed was left out of the medal podium, despite a fantastic start to his routine.
We are extremely proud of all of our athletes and look forward to 2018!
