Culture & Sport hosted its first Patrons Welcome on Thursday evening, inviting distinguished guests, presidents, captains and sport/music scholars. Helen Palmer (Culture & Sport Manager) hosted an evening of light entertainment and refreshments on Thursday 3rd November for all our Music & Sport patrons. The patron’s scheme has been running for several years and has recently grown with more Academic and Support Staff showing specific interest to be a figure head of a Sports Team or Music.
The night was a great opportunity for the Scholars, Captains and Presidents to meet their patron and form relationships to enable sharing of forthcoming success stories and create a deeper understanding of the commitment and programme athletes and musicians are involved in.
There were some great stories and support shared between staff and students including potential venue negotiations at local schools for additional training opportunities and different pathway models to achieve World Class medals such as moving to Hawaii to access the best windsurfing in the world. The event was held on the 3rd Floor of the new Fusion building next to the juice bar. The drinks and high quality finger buffet were a hit with everyone including the free tasting of the latest super fruit “Acai”.
We would like to thank all the Patrons for their time on the evening and in advance for their continued support with the ensembles, teams and athletes throughout the season.
A special thank you to the pianist Edward Parker (1st Year student Mental Health Nursing) for providing the entertainment and to all the SportBU staff for helping
set up and clearing down the evening.
George Stern (Captain & Scholar for Lacrosse)
“I enjoyed connecting with other athletes and forming bridges with Ian in making a lasting partnership for the years to come”
Saskia Sills (Scholar for Windsurfing)
“I just wanted to say thank you for organising last night and “finding” Rebecca. I think she is really going to help me and windsurfing at the uni! Great success!”
