This weekend (8/9 – Oct) the BU Weightlifting Team headed to Castleford for the British Junior & Under 23s Weightlifting Championships. The competition was staged over 2 days at the Phoneix Theatre in castleford and is one of British Weightlifting’s main events each year. The days show cases some of the countrie’s best young athletes with Rio Olympian Rebekah Tyler entered as well as a number of the countries other world class lifters.
After the team won the British Student Championships earlier in the year, they have been working hard to qualify themselves. The 15 strong group have been putting in over 18 hours per week since june for this competition, 9 made the qualification earning the right to attend.
Up first on the Saturday was BU scholar Elliott Brown in the men’s 62kg category, up against stiff competition Brown dealt with the pressure and put in a solid performance to bring home the team’s first silver medal of the weekend. With strong performances from all 8 members of the team, BU took home 5 medals, with notable performances from Lauren Miller winning silver in the Women’s 75kg class and BU Scholar Nam ahmadi winning Gold in the men’s 69kg class, Nam flys to Merida Mexico next month to represent TeamGB at the World Uni Games with fellow team mate Lewis Riddett.
