On Thursday 12th May 2016, SportBU and Bournemouth University hosted their annual Sports Ball at the O2 Academy Bournemouth.
In black tie dress 400 student athletes and VIP guests arrived to recognise the commitment, hard work, dedication and sporting success of SportBU individuals and teams. VIP guests included; Bournemouth University Patrons, Sports Co-ordinators from both Bath and Swansea University and newly announced kit provider Viper10 along with SportBU staff (who were looking fabulous out of their usual trackies!).
SportBU’s Barry Squires hosted the evening which commenced with a welcoming speech and stage Selfie as well as a recap of BU’s Varsity success against Solent on the 4th May, with the promotional video aired for the first time!
The evening of celebrations continued with individual successes for Noorin Gulam, who took home Sportswoman of the Year for the 2nd year in a row due to her GB and record setting achievements in Weightlifting, and a modest Aaron Bullock taking home Sportsman of the Year for his huge contribution to the BU Golf programme . However the stand out winners of the night were Men’s Hockey, who pocketed Most Improved Team of the Year, Coach of the Year and Sports Personality.
Between awards students and guests were served a delicious three course meal and entertained with SportBU Mastermind videos, testing the knowledge of the team captains, as well as a final video montage of the 2015/16 season.
With a record number of attendees, this year was the biggest and best Sports Ball yet, and with new teams set to be added for the 2016/17 season this event is set to grow year on year.
