On Wednesday 4 May Bournemouth University (BU) took on Southampton Solent University (SSU) in its first ever official Varsity over four sites across Bournemouth. The event saw over 550 athletes taking place in 21 fixtures across 13 sports all wanting to take home the Varsity Trophy.

The stage was set with all athletes, spectators, officials and staff waking up to a stunning day with the Bournemouth sunshine lighting up all sites.

BU started well in the early fixtures with wins in Futsal, Equestrian and Rowing at the Varsity smaller sites. The atmosphere grew and grew on Talbot Campus with a social media meltdown with #BUvsSolent followed by further wins in Badminton and women’s Basketball for BU.

Bournemouth Sports Club was the main Varsity venue with 14 of the 21 fixtures taking place across the fabulous sports ground. The venue had an Athlete Village with music provided by Nerve Radio, Viper 10 announcing its partnership with BU as its official kit provider until 2020, Bournemouth 7s providing netball and dodgeball challenges and food and drink provided by Bournemouth Sports Club. Everyone knew that when the ice cream van came out, summer had finally arrived in the South.

BU’s chosen charity for Varsity 2016 was Stonewall: Acceptance without Exception and SSU supported Marie Curie. All athletes and staff were given rainbow and yellow laces to show their support for the charities and wore them with pride (check out all the photos on our social media page).

BU wins came in thick and fast with wins in all Hockey and Rugby, Table Tennis, Netball and Squash. A real great performance by our BU athletes which sparked a revival from SSU who saw wins in Cricket, men’s Basketball, Football and American Football.

The afternoon saw a mass of athletes and spectators all arrive onsite (reportedly 1,200) to enjoy the sport, the weather and the celebrating. The hype and atmosphere kept growing and came to its finest at 1730 at the start of the men’s Football spectacle game. This game had everything, goals, crowds, songs, controversy and a winner. The game started well for both sides until Solent broke the deadlock and put them up 0-1. BU came back into the game with a brilliant header to get the hosts back into it at 1-1. SSU then took two great chances and finished the game 1-3 winners.

BU came out as overall Varsity winners with a 14-7 win!

BU Varsity Manager Michael Barry commented saying “The day was a huge success and thank you to everyone involved. We love how the students enjoyed it and really engaged in all activities. The sport during the day was really good and a great competition, to come out as overall winners was a perfect bonus”.

SSU Sport Development officer Basia Dudek said “It was a fantastic event and all our students enjoyed the day and are buzzing about it”.

BU would like to thank everyone involved in this event and are already looking forward to Varsity 2017!
