On Wednesday 4 May for the first time in the University’s history, Bournemouth University (BU) and Southampton Solent University (SSU) will do battle for the south coast Varsity Trophy! This inaugural Varsity will see over 500 athletes taking part in a wide range of events, from American Football to Squash to Netball – providing both universities the opportunity to showcase a spectrum of sporting talent. Check the timetable to see how you can get involved.
This year BU will have the advantage of playing on home turf with fixtures taking place at Bournemouth Sports Club, along with Talbot Campus and Canford School. In addition to the sporting fixtures we promise a host of entertainment including; DJs from BU’s Nerve Radio providing much needed banter and commentary, free Ultimate Frisbee taster sessions, speed gun challenges, along with pop up bottle bars, and food outlets.
Women’s Rugby President Louise Burgess and Captain Izzie West said:
‘‘There is a massive buzz around the university about Varsity. We want the Varsity Trophy in its rightful place and can’t wait to put on our Bournemouth shirts one more time. We love being involved in the inaugural year of this event and are keen to leave a legacy for future years and #BringHomeTheW. We’re also excited to have the opportunity to watch other BU teams who are often playing at the same time as us; this is a great excuse to come together for a final time to support one another to Varsity victory!‘’
Spectators are welcome at all sites with FREE entry – come with your enthusiastic cheers and energise our BU athletes to win Varsity 2016! Don’t forget the Varsity after party will take place at The Old Fire Station where the battles will continue on the dance floor! Tickets will be available on the door to spectators or via the Student Union at the cost of just £2!
BU’s chosen charity for Varsity 2016 is Stonewall: Acceptance without Exception and SSU will be supporting Marie Curie. Look out for the rainbow and yellow items of clothing our athletes will be wearing on the day to show their support.
Sport Development Administrator Natalie Carr said:
” Although Varsity will be a highly competitive event, it is also a showcase of the sporting talents we have here at BU and more importantly a great day for the athletes and spectators, we can’t wait to see the event grow year on year’’
The countdown starts now! Let the battle begin! #BUvsSolent
