BU 11-3 University West of England (BU Win)

Mens Lacrosse President Michael Gara gives his accounts as the team reach new heights with a 2016/17 potentially bringing the BUCS Southern Premiership.

The 2015/16 season started in bitter sweet fashion for Men’s Lacrosse. We welcomed back a number of players from placement to strengthen the team; but losing our coach as he had to move back to California.

Despite our best efforts we were unable to locate a full time replacement and the coaching responsibilities fell to co-captains Max West and Elliot Beesley. Losing our opening league match meant we started the season on the back foot; however we gathered ourselves and went on to remain unbeaten in the league for the rest of the season. The opening day defeat left us fighting for the league title with arch rivals Swansea right up until the last week of the season; when they overtook us to go top in the league.

This added some extra spice to our top of the table clash with Swansea in the last week of the season. Travelling early on a Saturday we were fired up to bring home the win and put us back on top of the league. Standout performances from our captains and a fantastic individual goal from Dunstan Harris gave Bournemouth a 7-6 victory; in a game where there was never more than one goal between the teams. The winning goal was scored by Max West with just forty seconds of the game remaining!!

The final game of the season came just four days later when Bournemouth travelled to Bristol to play UWE. UWE with nothing left to play for started strongly and took an early 3-2 in the first quarter. A rousing pep talk from Elliot Beesley fired up the defence of Andy Cousins, Andy Hutchinson and Mike Gara to shut UWE out for the rest of the game restricting them to long shots which were easily saved by substitute goalkeeper Billy Westbrook. A handful of goals each for Max West and Tom Becque saw us win 11-3 and with it the West 1 league title.
