Over the weekend Bournemouth University Sports Scholar and Welsh Senior Internal player Chloe Thomas won the womens individual gold medal at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Individuals in Nottingham.
Chloe was seeded 4th in the tournament overall and started her campaign on Saturday where she comfortably won all three matches in her group 3-0. On Sunday Chloe had some tougher matches against other International players. Chloe went on to beat N.Jackson 3-0, N.Slater 3-2, A.Philiips 3-0 (Quarter Final) and then F Y.King 3-1 (Semi Final).
In the Final Chloe faced the number 1 seed from the University of Nottingham, M.Tsaptsinos, who had a large home crowd support. The noise in the venue was electric and with Chloe only having fellow team mate Oliver Hack and coach Matt Ware behind her the environment was hostile. This did not phase Chloe who positively secured a 2-0 lead. The 3rd set was very close and unfortunately Chloe was unable to conv
ert forcing a 4th set. With determination and a strong mental approach Chloe was able to close out the game and beat her worthy opponent 3-1. The event is being recognised as one of the strongest women’s events currently running in the UK.
BU Coach Matt Ware said “It was a great weekend at the British University Table Tennis Championships in Nottingham for BU. As coach I was delighted to see our star student Chloe Thomas collect gold in the women’s singles. Being 4th seed she was up against it, however she overcome her seeded expectation to make the final. It proved to be a great match but Chloe was just too quick for the number 1 seed to clinch the 3-1 victory”.
Chloe also competed in the mixed doubles which started on Sunday morning, Chloe and partner Oliver Hack won their first 2 rounds but in the Quarter Finals they were out played by the number 1 seed and overall winners from the University of Nottingham.
