This week SportBU focus on Netball and look at how their season has started and their hopes for 2016.
At this time last season the 1st team sat in the middle of division 2 with a variety of results hoping the season would improve. They all pulled together and finished the season by winning the remaining 4 league games and winning the Cup as part of the finals day at Exeter University.
The 2015/16 season has started very brightly for the 1st team who are currently unbeaten in all competitions and looking to achieve the league and cup double. 1st team captains Laura Purssell and Bex Hymers said that “the entire team have started very well this year and all want to outdo our results from last year, continue our undefeated streak and retain the Cup”.
The 2nd team have started the season well with back to back wins against Solent and are really looking to improve in two key fixtures against Bath 4 and Exeter 3, which could bring them up to 4th place. 1st team vice-captain Bex is “really impressed with how the 2nds are getting on and their commitment to the season”.
Sport specific training and S&C has been the real focus this season after last year winning S&C team of the year. The squad are hoping to retain this title for 2016. Since the squad have returned from the Christmas break they have been pushing their fitness to the max and doing a bleep test each Thursday night until fixtures begin. 1st team captain Laura has said that “this training is really pushing all of the girls, it is hard work but we are already seeing the improvements on the court”.
SportBU also have a thriving Social Netball programme where those away from the teams train and play in a fun environment on a weekly basis on Talbot Campus. This session is open to everyone at BU on a Tuesday night in the Sports Hall from 5pm.
