Donna Riggs medals for the first time at the Judo senior Championships held in Sheffield.
The British senior judo Championships was held at the English institute of sport on Sunday 13th December 2015 for the top 16 ranked players in each weight category.
Donna fought in the senior women under 78kg and going into the event ranked 9th she knew she was in for a tough day. A winning throw in the first fight settled Donna’s nerves a little before she came up against a player she had never beaten before. Having gone nearly the distance an error gifted the opposition the win. The next fight was for a spot in the semi- finals and Donna managed to hold her opponent down for the win.
A loss in the next round to the gold medallist meant that she finished in the bronze medal position regardless of her last result.
Donna said ‘I have managed to get into this event a number of times but I have never been able to medal, so to leave here this year with a medal and a chance at fighting for Great Britain is an amazing feeling. Big thank you to my coaches, training partners and to Bournemouth University Sports for enabling me to get there.’
The medallists from this event are invited to join the Great Britain team for 2016 which means access to the best coaches and opportunities to train with the elite players at the centre of excellence in Walsall.
