On Wednesday 18th March, Exeter University played host to the South West Conference Cup Finals which involved 20 finals being played throughout Exeter. BU’s mixed golf 4th team started the day off at Warren Golf Club, however succumbed in an extremely close contest to University of Exeter’s 3rd team playing on their home course.

Action then moved over to Topsham Sports Ground where Women’s Football 1st, Men’s Football 2nd and Women’s Lacrosse 1st were all competing. Women’s Lacrosse got the action off to a fantastic start, demolishing Plymouth University’s 1st 25-1 to secure their league and cup double. Men’s Football 2nd overpowered University of Bath’s 2nd team 3-0 in an impressive display whilst Women’s Football 1st were hoping to duplicate their league success by completing the double, however unfortunately fell 3-1 to Gloucestershire University’s 2nd team.

Women’s Badminton 1st and Netball 1st completed the day’s play at University of Exeter’s Sports Park. Badminton suffered a close 5-3 loss to Swansea University’s 1st team whilst Netball finished off the day in style by emerging as 37-34 victors in a game that was close throughout, against University of Cardiff’s 2nd team.

Netball Captain, Laura Purssell said: “After trailing Cardiff for the majority of the match, it was one of the most incredible and rewarding experiences when the final whistle was blown to win. It wouldn’t have been possible without our amazing supporters and lovely coach who did not give up on us at the sidelines!”

Having 6 Bournemouth University teams involved in the Final’s day is a fantastic achievement and is testiment to the commitment and dedication all the teams have shown throughout the year. Winning 3 titles highlights Bournemouth’s increasing dominance within the South West Region and provides motivation to better it next year.
