Noorin Gulam wins gold at Weightlifting Championships
On the 5th January most of us were probably thinking about buying a gym membership for our latest New Year’s resolution, but BU student Noorin Gulam had already set out to achieve some pretty serious aspirations. She had 6 weeks to lose 9kg to make weight for the Senior women’s 53kg category at this year’s English Weightlifting Championships in Castleford. It was six weeks of gruelling training with up to 4 hours a day in the gym 5-6 days a week, whilst sticking to nearly every New Year’s resolution you could imagine when it comes to food; but after driving 280 miles north and going 36 hours with no food or water, she made it stepping on the scales at 52.8kg.
Then came the competition itself; after refuelling Noorin had to face the challenge of beating 19 times British Champion Jo Calvino and Olympic Development Squad team mate Laura Faulkner to claim the title. After a close battle between the 3 in the snatch, Noorin prevailed lifting 66kg in the Snatch and 84kg (13½ stone) in the Clean & Jerk; out-lifting the former British Champion by 5 kg to win Gold and only narrowly missing a Junior British record in the process!
