About the Project<\/h2>\n\"Google<\/a>\n

Archaeologists working on The Stonehenge Riverside Project<\/a> have generated large volumes of spatial data, through geophysical surveys and excavations.<\/p>\n

Bournemouth University\u2019s Google Under-the-Earth: Seeing Beneath Stonehenge integrates this spatial data so that people around the world can see beneath the soil.<\/p>\n

Researchers at Bournemouth University built the spatial database and added KML coding. This data has now been uploaded to Google Earth for you to enjoy.<\/p>\n

Google Under-the-Earth: Seeing Beneath Stonehenge was created at Bournemouth University by Dr Kate Welham<\/a>, Mark Dover<\/a>, Harry Manley<\/a> and Lawrence Shaw<\/a>.\u00a0 It is jointly directed by Dr Kate Welham and Professor Mike Parker Pearson<\/a> at the University of Sheffield.<\/p>\n

It is envisaged that Google Under-the-Earth: Seeing-beneath-Stonehenge\u2019 could be the start of a new layer in Google Earth. Many of the world\u2019s great archaeological sites could be added, incorporating details of 150 year\u2019s worth of excavations and 20 years geophysical and remote sensing surveys.<\/p>\n

The project is funding through Google Research Awards<\/a>; a program aimed at facilitating interaction between Google and the academic world. It is part of their mission is to \u2018Organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.\u2019<\/p>\n

Stonehenge Riverside Project<\/h2>\n

The Stonehenge Riverside Project<\/a> was a joint collaboration between Universities of Bournemouth<\/a>, Bristol<\/a>, Manchester<\/a>, Sheffield<\/a> and UCL<\/a>. It was led by Professor Mike Parker Pearson<\/a>, University of Sheffield, and co-directed by Professor Julian Thomas<\/a>, University of Manchester, Dr Joshua Pollard<\/a>, University of Southampton (formally University of Bristol), Dr Colin Richards<\/a>, University of Manchester, Dr Chris Tilley<\/a>, University College London and Dr Kate Welham<\/a>, Bournemouth University.<\/p>\n

This project has been supported by: The Arts and Humanities Research Council<\/a>, the British Academy<\/a>, the Royal Archaeological Institute<\/a>, the Society of Antiquaries<\/a>, the Prehistoric Society<\/a>, the McDonald Institute<\/a>, Robert Kiln Charitable Trust<\/a>, Andante Travel<\/a>, Sheffield University Enterprise Scheme<\/a>, the British Academy<\/a>, the National Geographic Society<\/a>, with financial support from English Heritage<\/a> and the National Trust<\/a> for outreach.
