Sugandha Bhandari (India)

Hi! I am Sugandha Bhandari from India, currently doing my master’s in Corporate Communication at Bournemouth University. Starting university far away from home was nerve-wrecking. I was both excited and scared about starting my postgraduate studies abroad. I was fortunate enough to find the services offered by the Student Wellbeing team soon enough and felt better straightaway.

A whole team working for your wellbeing

The Student Wellbeing Team can be found at Talbot House on the main campus, providing various services which promote mental health. These services are confidential and completely free, including drop-in sessions, workshops, one-on-one pre-booked appointments and counselling, plus information and links to other services, such as the Big White Wall – a digital mental health support service which is available online, 24/7, and is completely anonymous, so you can express yourself freely and openly.

A balanced mind needs a healthy body

The Medical Centre on the main campus offers a range of medical services, health and sexual advice. Along with this, out of hours and emergency medical support is also available. You will be instructed to use their services during the first week of your arrival. Don’t procrastinate!

Practicing sports and exercising is another way to take care of yourself while interacting and making new friends at BU. SportBU offers a wide range of fitness and rehabilitation services, including health check, personal training, massage and chiropractic treatments.

Practical advice

The Student Union (SUBU) provides free, independent and confidential advice and information in areas such as housing, money, personal and academic issues, as well as employment. SUBU is also accredited by the Advice Quality Standard and is a member of AdviceUK and the National Association of Student Money Advisers.

Peer to peer support network

The Student Support and Engagement Team consists of recently graduated BU students, who provide personal support and advice to new students. The team is divided by different faculties and if you have any questions, it is very easy to reach them. Just check this webpage.

A place for your soul

The Chaplaincy is for everyone to relax and have a peaceful time, regardless of faith background. It is the home for spirituality, as well as free cookies and coffee on Wednesday afternoons!

I find that BU takes mental and physical wellbeing very seriously. Apart from the main support available at the university, BU has also made a list of resources which can be very useful. From anxiety to relationships, BU has everything covered. I hope this is helpful for anyone who is looking for any kind of support, but haven’t managed to find it until now.
